Small Developer Virtual Seminars – City of Buffalo

The City of Buffalo’s Office of Strategic Planning and the Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency are excited to announce that registration is open for the free virtual seminars on small scale development.

These seminars will focus on project formation for neighborhood-based development to help residents, local landowners, and community organizations think creatively about how infill can impact the people and places they love.

The seminars will be offered at both the beginner and advanced levels. This is a follow up to previous neighborhood planning conversations and the lecture recently held by the City of Buffalo in partnership with the Incremental Development Alliance on small scale real estate development in the Masten Park and Cold Springs neighborhoods.

Details about the seminars:

3hr Beginner Seminar | March 25th 3P – 6P

How to think like a small developer

This seminar is focused heavily on the who, how, and why of infill to ensure that local ownership, wealth, and culture are maintained and strengthened with every new development. This seminar will answer questions such as:

  • What is incremental development?
  • Who makes a great small-scale developer?
  • What makes a great infill project?
  • How does this lead to a flywheel effect?
  • How can you help?

4hr Advanced Seminar | March 30th 10A – 2P

Rebuilding neighborhood essentials: a crash course for local landowners who care

In this seminar, we get tactical with local people who are ready to act. This seminar is focused on the principles and discipline that make small-scale developers successful. The goal is to help local people think about their neighborhood like a small-scale developer would and make small investments (from any starting point) that give more than they take. We consider development projects through these questions:

  • Is it good for the neighborhood?
  • Can I legally and feasibly do this?
  • Is it financially viable?
  • Do I have the team to do it well?
  • How does it fit in my flywheel?
  • What next?
