Raíces Theatre Company Announces Its 2017-18 Season

BUFFALO, NY (August 4th, 2017) -- Raíces Theatre Company, Western New York’s premier Latinx theater production company, is proud to announce its schedule for the 2017-18 season. Raíces will stage two full productions along with a series of events during this upcoming season as it looks to continue the momentum it has been building as Buffalo’s only Spanish/English bilingual theater company.

The first full production of Raíces’ season will be Desde el Puente - La Parranda, a Christmas-themed version of Raíces’ annual one-act festival, opening December 1st, 2017. Much like last season’s version of Desde el Puente, this Christmas edition of the festival will be completely written, directed and acted by the members of the Raíces Theatre Company ensemble. Then in May, Raíces will stage La Lupe, a full-length musical about Lupe Victoria Yolí Raymond, the Queen of Latin Soul. Opening May 25th, 2018, this production will be the first full musical featuring a live band that Raíces has ever produced. Both of these productions will take place at the Manny Fried Playhouse, 255 Great Arrow Ave., Buffalo.

Fans of Raíces will also be able to see the ensemble’s work in a series of other events during the 2017-18 season. During Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15th, 2017 to October 15th, 2017), the Raíces ensemble will hold a fundraiser concert on Monday, September 25th in honor of the rich Latinx tradition from which the company draws its inspiration. The fundraiser concert will take place at The Kavinoky Theatre on the campus of D’Youville College, 320 Porter Ave., Buffalo. The company will also host three play readings at the Manny Fried Playhouse: The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity by Kristoffer Diaz on October 8th, 2017; Mojada by Luis Alfaro on January 28th, 2018; and Gorditas by Gustavo Ott (March) 18th, 2018 (this reading will be entirely in Spanish).

The 2017-18 theater season will be Raíces’ sixth season. In 2016, Raíces collaborated on a production of the Tony Award-winning musical In The Heights with MusicalFare, a production which earned Artie Award nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, and Best Production of a Musical (won). During the 2017 Artie Awards, Raíces’ production of Mariela in the Desert was recognized with an Artie Award nomination for Best Actress in a Play. Raíces has also been earning accolades from audiences for its Desde el Puente one-act festival, an annual production of original Latinx-themed material offered in tribute to local Hispanic community leader and writer Rafael Pérez.

About Raíces Theatre Company

Raíces Theatre Company is based in Buffalo, NY, and operates as Western New York’s premier Latinx bilingual theater company. Raíces - which means “roots” in Spanish - was chosen as the company’s name as it perfectly reflects the belief that, in order to truly understand who we are as Latinx people, we must celebrate the present while always looking at who we have been in the past in order to have a clear vision for the future. Its mission is to provide original theatrical entertainment for the WNY region which is specifically geared towards nearly 30,000 Hispanic people living in Buffalo and 10,000 more living across Erie County. The company is dedicated to develop, nourish, and produce modern and original works dealing with the Latinx experience in order to preserve our “raíces.” Raíces has also earned great recognition from the Buffalo theater community, having won one Artie Award and receiving five Artie Award nominations during its existence. It has also partnered successfully with many local theater companies including MusicalFare, Subversive Theatre Collective and Road Less Traveled Productions.
