(Rochester, NY) A Siena Research Institute poll shows that among respondents, Democrat Joe Morelle holds a commanding lead over Republican Jim Maxwell.
Pollsters asked participants who they’d vote for if the general election were held today, among some other questions. Of the respondents, 55 percent chose Morelle, the Assembly majority leader and an Irondequoit resident, while 31 percent chose Maxwell, a neurosurgeon who lives in East Rochester.
The poll also pointed out a potentially big problem for Maxwell. When asked their opinion of each candidate, 53 percent of respondents said they had a favorable view of Morelle, while 17 percent said they had a favorable view of Maxwell. But 71 percent of respondents said they either didn’t know who Maxwell was or didn’t have an opinion. By contrast, 29 percent of participants said they either didn’t know who Morelle was or had no opinion on him.
In terms of participants who viewed the candidates as unfavorable, 18 percent gave Morelle the thumbs down and 12 percent ranked Maxwell as such.
And 57 percent of the respondents disapproved of the job President Donald Trump is doing, while 34 percent approve.
The poll was based on responses from 500 likely voters in the 25th Congressional District, the House of Representatives seat that Morelle and Maxwell are running for.
