Governor Kathy Hochul announced over $2 billion in tax relief for nearly 3 million NY homeowners via the STAR program.

ALBANY, N.Y. — New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced Tuesday that over $2 billion in tax relief checks will be sent out to nearly three million New York homeowners as part of the state’s School Tax Relief (STAR) program.

Hochul says most homeowners who are eligible for STAR credit will receive a check between $350 and $600. Seniors who are eligible will receive a check between $700 and $1,500.

In Western New York, around 314,000 homeowners are eligible for STAR benefits, totaling about $168.5 million.

“The start of summer is also the start of STAR tax relief season for millions of New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “From tax credits and energy rebates to our expanded child tax credit and middle class tax cuts, we’re continuing to put more money back in New Yorkers’ pockets.”
Homeowners enrolled in the STAR credit program will receive their STAR checks before their school tax payment deadlines. Residents in areas with school tax due dates in late June and July, like Buffalo, can expect to receive their checks soon.
Homeowners who want to receive their STAR credit through direct deposit this year should enroll as soon as possible. Officials recommend signing up at least 15 business days before their local school tax deadline.
