Buffalo, NY – Mayor Byron W. Brown officially kicked off his Summer Youth Internship and Employment program today, launching the application period for 2023. The program provides six weeks of both in-person and virtual employment and work-readiness training to youth in the city of Buffalo during the summer months. Applying is easy. Interested youth can apply online at www.buffalony.gov/MSYAPP. Completed applications are due by March 31, 2023.

“My Administration remains committed to preparing city youth, of every background, to enter the workforce, despite the ongoing challenges as we continue to recover from the COVID-19 global health pandemic,” said Mayor Brown. “I am proud that we were able to continue this pioneering program over the last two years,

a remarkable achievement, particularly given the fact that we had to operate with the safety of participants during COVID. I want to recognize our many great partners for their commitment to providing opportunities for our city’s future leaders under such challenging and changing circumstances. Together, we provided valuable work experience to nearly 3,000 young city residents since 2020, over 27,000 young city residents since 2006. We are pleased to keep this strong tradition going, by implementing another year of summer employment which will provide life-changing pathways to career success.”

Mayor Brown continued, “As we continue to shape the workforce of tomorrow, my Administration will invest another $1.5 million this year, providing learn and earn opportunities to 1,500 youth. I am thankful to all of our employer partners, who play an important role in this program in exposing our young residents to the world of work. It is through continued investments and strong partnerships that we can further improve the long- term strength of our workforce.”

Youth can apply online at www.buffalony.gov/MSYAPP. To be eligible for Mayor Brown’s Summer Youth Internship and Employment Program, youth must be a City of Buffalo resident, between the ages of 14 and 21.

Each participant will be screened, assessed, and receive job readiness, life skills and financial literacy training. The City of Buffalo’s Division for Youth will provide youth counselors who will serve as monitors and provide program support for everyone participating in the program. College Students are encouraged to apply.

In order to determine your eligibility for the Mayor’s Summer Youth Internship and Employment Program, copies of the below items must be returned with your completed application:

1. Working Papers (obtained from your school’s counselor) for all youth under age 18
   • Ages 14-15 (Blue Card)
   • Ages 16-17 (Green Card)
2. Birth Certificate
3. Proof of Buffalo Residency (Utility Bills, Lease Agreement)
4. Family Income
5. Social Security Card
6. Attending School (Most recent School Report Card or Transcript)

Private sector businesses are encouraged to participate in Mayor Brown’s Summer Youth Internship and Employment Program by hiring youth who have submitted applications with the Mayor’s Program. Those businesses that hire city youth may also be eligible for tax credits. Not-for-profit and Community based organizations can also participate by providing a structured and supervised work environment for the summer and, through sponsorship and donations, the City of Buffalo will subsidize the wages of youth employed in these areas.
