Firefighters of the 7th Battalion 4th Platoon were called out to battle a structure fire in a large occupied two and a half story frame dwelling at 90 Humber Ave. in the City’s Delavan Grider Section early Friday morning February 19, 2016. Firefighters responded to a report of occupants trapped inside the structure. On that report an additional engine and ladder was dispatched and later Division Chief Michael Tuberdyke requested the balance of the 2nd alarm assignment.

High heat and heavy smoke conditions hampered the search.  A victim was located in a second floor bedroom and was brought out. It was later discovered that the victim was Juan Alberto Montanez, a father of five from San Lorenzo, PR who had been living in Buffalo for the last ten years.

The fire overtook the structure and firefighters were pulled from the building.

Prior to the arrival of fire personnel the father of children on the first floor apartment carried his 9-year-old daughter from the house and went back inside to find the rest of his family. He did not make it back out.

Several of the children recused during the fire by their father, remain hospitalized with severe injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The 9 year old suffered burns over 90 percent of her body, he was taken to the Burn Unit of E.C.M.C. , a mother and her two children were taken to Woman’s and Children’s Hospital. Two adult males died in the fire. Firefighters removed several victims from the structure.

Bishop Angelo Gauthier,  Rev. Gabriel Gauthier Wilmer Olivencia and other community members are working to help the family of Juan Alberto Montanez, the man that lost his life in the fire on Humber Ave. The Prince of Peace Christian Church is accepting monetary donations today and Wednesday from 9am – 2pm. If there is anyway that you and/or your organization can assist it will truly be a blessing.
