No matter how you decide to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, one thing that hasn’t changed is the need to help others struggling across Western New York.
” Meeting the needs of the Community”
Buffalo, NY On Monday November 23, 2020 at 10 am, Dr. Raul Vazquez, CEO of G-Health Enterprises and staff will distribute Turkey Baskets to members of the affiliate GBUAHN Home. This will take place at the newest location, 1195 Main Street. During this COVID 19 Thanksgiving, Dr. Vazquez increased the number of baskets to 750, as the call was much greater. Care Coordination staff have carefully chosen Health Home members with a need to deliver a basket to them. Understanding and providing solutions to social determinate of health is a daily part of a members care.
As COVID 19 cases continue to increase rapidly across the City of Buffalo, the safest way to celebrate Thanksgiving is to celebrate at home with the people you live with. There was concern that staff would attend large gatherings, therefore personal Turkeys are also be provided to staff to encourage ” a stay at home Thanksgiving”
No matter how you decide to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, one thing that hasn’t changed is the need to help others struggling across Western New York.
Here are just a few ways to reach out:
• People can volunteer with Buffalo City Mission’s “Turkey Express” to deliver packaged, ready-to-heat meals to the elderly, shut-ins and low-income families and individuals on Thanksgiving Day.
“We have been doing this for more than 40 years now,” said Aubrey Calhoun, associate executive director.
Some families return to volunteer year after year, she said. Registration is at buffalocitymission.org.
The project involves 176 delivery teams in vehicles (families, couples, individuals) delivering 5,300 meals to households. The meals will be prepared and packed in containers by FeedMore WNY for no-contact delivery, following Covid-19 guidelines. A similar program requiring volunteers takes place on Christmas.
Donations are also being accepted on the website to provide for additional meals served at the Buffalo City Mission.
The Response to Love Center is in need of uncooked turkey breasts to be included in take-home meals. Canned goods, such as corn; sweet potatoes; cranberries; cake or muffin mix, and other items that will be prepared on site are also needed.
For the past 36 years, the center has provided a home-cooked Thanksgiving Day meal for the neediest on Buffalo’s East Side. Because of Covid-19, the meals will be packaged in a festive way for pickup under a tent outdoors, said Sister Mary Johnice, director.
Donations are accepted from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at 130 Kosciuszko St. For a no-contact unload, call 894-7030 upon arrival.
• FeedMore WNY has a number of options for people to help any time of the year, all posted on feedmorewny.org – from monetary and food donations to volunteer opportunities.
In 2019, Meals on Wheels for WNY and Food Bank of WNY combined to become FeedMore WNY to serve vulnerable community members and eradicate hunger in Western New York by providing nutritious foods.
Other charitable organizations and agencies list donation requests and volunteer opportunities on their websites and Facebook pages, including Salvation Army (buffalo.salvationarmy.org); Friends of Night People (friendsofnightpeople.com); Hearts for the Homeless (heartsforthehomeless.org); Heart, Love & Soul (heartloveandsoul.org), and others.
