SUNY Jamestown Community College is expanding the academic and workforce development course offerings available at the North County Center in Dunkirk.

The location has long been an option for students in northern Chautauqua County who want to stay closer to home while taking general education classes to work toward a degree, pursuing 10-week courses, or one-year certificate paths. This academic year will see a 12-week Industrial Maintenance Technician training and Human Biology course open at the Bennett Road location.

The new cohorts already have promising student numbers according to Wende Lescynski, director of Adult Learner Initiatives and the North County Center, with a few seats still available.

“There are about six to nine spots left in both IMT and the Biology course,” Lescynski said. “No prior college experience is needed for either path.”

The IMT program is a 12-week, in-person, hands-on program that provides students with the necessary skills for entry-level positions installing, troubleshooting, and repairing manufacturing equipment. Students completing the program will earn 12 credits toward an Industrial Equipment Technology certificate, or an associate’s degree in Mechatronics.

The Human Biology course is required for anyone interested in programs such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Dental Hygiene, or Radiologic Technology.

The North County Center has two buildings with class and conference areas, computer labs, a full-size basketball court, and weight room. The study areas and computer labs are available for any SUNY JCC student to use during regular business hours, even if they are usually in Jamestown or Olean.

“We’re open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday,” Lescynski shared. “All the business and enrollment functions, such as completing applications, registering for classes, and even submitting health information, can be done here.”

With Campus Life events happening regularly, and work opportunities available, students at the North County Center have a taste of college life, paired with a tight-knit community that supports them and can quickly feel like family.
