PIITSBURGH, Pa. (AP) — Joe Biden is mounting a more aggressive offense against President Donald Trump with a rare public appearance in Pittsburgh on Monday, where he’s expected to say Trump is contributing to the violence in the streets nationwide.

According to a campaign aide, the Democratic presidential nominee will accuse Trump of exacerbating unrest and will make the argument that the violent turn some of the recent protests is the Trump administration’s problem.

Trump and Republicans are increasingly running on a “law and order” message heading into the November elections, highlighting violence at protests focused on criminal justice reform as examples of what the country will look like under a Biden administration

In Kenosha, Wisconsin, the National Guard was deployed to quell demonstrations in response to a police shooting of a Black man that have resulted in looting, vandalism and the shooting deaths of two protesters.

And this weekend, one of Trump’s supporters was shot at a demonstration in Portland, Oregon, prompting multiple tweets from Trump himself, including one late Sunday erroneously accusing Biden of failing to criticize the “agitators” at the protests. Biden did, however, issue a statement Sunday afternoon denouncing the violent acts.

“I condemn violence of every kind by anyone, whether on the left or the right. And I challenge Donald Trump to do the same,” he said in the statement.

Portland has seen nearly 100 consecutive nights of Black Lives Matter protests and many have ended with vandalism to federal and city property.

Trump and other speakers at last week’s Republican National Conventionfrequently highlighted incidents of violence at protests that were sparked by the police killing of George Floyd last May, charging that if Biden is elected in November such incidents will become the norm.

Biden has repeatedly denounced violence at these protests, and last week accused Trump of viewing the violence as a “political benefit.”

“He’s rooting for more violence, not less. And it’s clear about that,” he said.

President reacts with fury during press conference, calling Ted Wheeler ‘wacky’, a ‘fool’ and a ‘dummy’ – and his target reacts in real time

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler told those who might be seeking retribution for the fatal shooting of a supporter of President Donald Trump to “stay away”.

He made the plea at a press conference in which he also blamed the president for inciting violence, calling him out for four years of what he called racist and bigoted hate speech.

Mr Wheeler said: “President Trump, for four years we’ve had to live with you and your racist attacks on black people. We learned early about your sexist attitudes towards women. We’ve had to endure clips of you mocking a disabled man; we’ve had to listen to your anti-democratic attacks on journalists; we’ve read your tweets slamming private citizens to the point of receiving death threats; and we’ve listened to your attacks on immigrants.”

He added: “Do you seriously wonder, Mr President, why this is the first time in decades that America has seen this level of violence? It’s you – who have created the hate and the division.

“You bring no peace. You bring no respect to our democracy.”

In a further jab he said: “You’ve tried to divide us more than any other figure in modern history and now you want me to stop the violence you helped create. What America needs is for you to be stopped so that we can come back together as one America.”

Mayor Wheeler said that he mourned the fact that a man had been killed on the street on Saturday night, and denounced the violence.

The man, who has not yet been publicly identified, but was wearing a cap withe the insignia of far-right group Patriot Prayer, was shot in the street while a convoy of vehicles driven by Trump supporters was driven through the city, where protests in favour of racial justice have raged for weeks.

On Sunday morning the president had fired off a barrage of tweets and retweets, some of them insulting Mr Wheeler. One of his retweets, from an account title Tiff, reads: “Ted Wheeler is the useless f***ing idiot and comic relief that gets everyone killed in every disaster movie.” The president added: “Tone down the language, but TRUE!”

After apparently spending much of the day golfing in Virginia, Mr Trump reacted to the mayor’s press conference with fury as it was still going on.

He tweeted: “Ted Wheeler, the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland, who has watched great death and destruction of his City during his tenure, thinks this lawless situation should go on forever. Wrong! Portland will never recover with a fool for a Mayor.

“He tried mixing with the Agitators and Anarchists and they mocked him. He would like to blame me and the Federal Government for going in, but he hasn’t seen anything yet. We have only been there with a small group to defend our U.S. Courthouse, because he couldn’t do it.”

He added: “The people of Portland, like all other cities & parts of our great Country, want Law & Order. The Radical Left Democrat Mayors, like the dummy running Portland, or the guy right now in his basement unwilling to lead or even speak out against crime, will never be able to do it!”

Mr Wheeler was asked about the tweets during the press conference.

He responded by asking the president directly how he thought such comments could be “constructive”. Instead he called for Mr Trump to condemn violence and to “work together to help move this country forward”.

On Sunday afternoon, Joe Biden issued a statement condemning the violence and called on Mr Trump to do the same.

The Democratic presidential candidate wrote: “It does not matter if you find the political views of your opponents abhorrent, any loss of life is a tragedy. Today there is another family grieving in America, and Jill and I offer our deepest condolences.”

He added: “We must not become a country at war with ourselves. A country that accepts the killing of fellow Americans who do not agree with you. A country that vows vengeance toward one another.

“But that is the America that President Trump wants us to be, the America he believes we are.”

He said the president was “recklessly encouraging violence”.

Katy Perry has given birth to a baby girl named Daisy Dove Bloom.

The pop superstar and her partner, actor Orlando Bloom, got UNICEF to announce the news on its Instagram account. Both Perry and Bloom are goodwill ambassadors for the United Nations agency that helps children.

UNICEF posted a black and white photograph of the infant’s hand and said the happy couple told the organization: “We are floating with love and wonder from the safe and healthy arrival of our daughter.”

In the Instagram post, the couple also spoke about how fortunate they were to have had a “peaceful” birthing experience with good healthcare — something, they said, many families do not experience

“Smile,” Perry’s fifth major-label album, will be released Friday. The 35-year-old in a recent interview with The Associated Press talked about about finding her smile again after a few years of pain.

“I went through a reckoning of self and really re-prioritized what was important and my association with validation, or my relationship with validation,” she said.

The baby is Perry’s first. Bloom and his former wife, Miranda Kerr, have a son, Flynn, who was born in 2011.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Another day of the NBA playoffs will be postponed, a person with knowledge of the details told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The three games will join the three that weren’t played Wednesday, the person told the AP on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made.

Play was set to resume at 4 p.m. with Game 6 of the Western Conference series between Utah and Denver. Boston and Toronto were also to begin their second-round series before the Clippers and Dallas met in the nightcap.

It was the Raptors and Celtics who had been most vocal about the idea of a boycott, but the Milwaukee Bucks acted first when they opted to remain in their locker room instead of playing their Game 5 against Orlando on Wednesday.

Players also decided Thursday that they want to continue the season, another person with knowledge of the details told AP. the person said It was not clear yet when the season would resume.

The NBA’s board of governors met separately Thursday to decide next steps.

One potential remedy for the schedule, one of the people said, was to play the three games that were postponed Wednesday on Friday, and the three games scheduled for Thursday on Saturday, though that had not been decided.

Starting with the Bucks, who refused to take the court for their game Wednesday against the Orlando Magic, players from six teams made the extraordinary decisions to protest the shooting by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday of Jacob Blake, a Black man, apparently in the back while three of his children looked on.

Kenosha is about 40 miles south of Milwaukee.

NBA players didn’t come to Disney solely for a restart to their season. They also wanted social reform, as did other sports leagues — many of which followed the NBA’s lead Wednesday by calling off games. Some NFL teams did the same Thursday, choosing not to practice.

It followed a similar pattern as what happened in March: The NBA was the first league to shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic, and other sports followed then as well.

“The biggest thing that we all understand is if we’re not playing, what are we doing? What are we doing to show and to help what’s going on outside this bubble?” Boston Celtics forward Grant Williams said, shortly before the Bucks were scheduled to tip off their game against the MagicInstead, the Bucks players remained in the locker room, finally emerging hours later to read a statement demanding action from lawmakers and encouraging voting by citizens.

They changed the narrative across the entire sports landscape, putting the focus squarely on social justice reform in protest of the shooting of Blake.

While players and teams from baseball, the WNBA and MLS sat out their competitions Wednesday night, NBA players and coaches met for nearly three hours in a Disney hotel to determine next steps, including whether the season should continue. They did not come to a consensus, a person with knowledge of the meeting told AP on condition of anonymity because details weren’t revealed publicly.

More talks took place in the early hours of Thursday, followed by the player meeting that morning to decide to continue the season.

The Western & Southern Open won’t be played Thursday, with the U.S. Tennis Association, along with the ATP and WTA Tours, announcing play would be paused after two-time Grand Slam women’s champion Naomi Osaka had already said she wouldn’t play her semifinal match.

“I don’t expect anything drastic to happen with me not playing, but if I can get a conversation started in a majority white sport I consider that a step in the right direction,” Osaka tweeted. “Watching the continued genocide of Black people at the hand of the police is honestly making me sick to my stomach.”

Before coming to Disney, many NBA players wrestled for weeks about whether it was even right to play, fearing that a return to games would take attention off the deaths of, among others, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd in recent months.

They ultimately decided coming to the bubble and playing televised games would give them the largest platform, though now at least some are wondering if that’s still true.

It appears now they will find out if that’s the case.

Western New York’s rate of positive COVID-19 tests has been above 1 percent for nine straight days. The region’s daily average number of new cases is now 70 cases per day, the highest since mid-June. It is driven in part by clusters, including a food processing plant in Chautauqua County that has been tied to 53 cases to date, but there is also evidence of community spread which this testing effort is designed to help detect and control.

Jody Lomeo, President & CEO of Kaleida Health, said, “This is a great example of collaboration and working together to help the community when it is in need. The Governor’s leadership and initiative to bring rapid testing here this weekend is important from a public health standpoint. With the increase in positive COVID-19 cases across Western New York, it is incumbent upon us – the health system, our government and the community – to come together and help find a solution. Collectively, we all need to continue to do all that we can to expand testing and ensuring access in the community for anyone who wants or needs to get tested.”

Thomas J. Quatroche Jr., PhD, President and CEO, Erie County Medical Center Corporation said, “ECMC is very appreciative of Governor Cuomo’s leadership and commitment to the health and safety of the residents of Western New York and our frontline workers. Our dedicated and experienced caregivers are ready to support the activation of the state’s rapid test sites, which will provide us with valuable information on the spread of the COVID-19 virus. With our partners at Kaleida Health and other healthcare providers, we ask our fellow citizens to continue to adhere to vitally important precautions like masking, social distancing and hand hygiene to ensure we protect our family, friends and neighbors.”

Catholic Health President & CEO Mark Sullivan said,
“New York’s ability to effectively test and contact trace depends on close collaboration between the state and its hospitals, and we are proud to partner with Governor Cuomo in this latest effort to address a spike in Western New York’s rate of positive COVID-19 tests. Together we will use our shared resources to provide free rapid COVID testing in more places so we can continue to slow the spread and save lives in the region.”
